The attitude towards ICT use and challenges faced by small and medium enterprises: the case study of printing and publishing industry in Dar es Salaam.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Mcharo, John Tumaini
The study looked at the attitude toward ICT use and challenges facing small and medium enterprises, in the printing and publishing industry in Dar Es Salaam. The driving force behind the study is the inherent problems pertaining in the industry of poor quality, prolonged lead and delivery time and the high price of the produced articles, all of which lead customers to seek services outside of the country. The study reveals that ICT application in the industry is minimum and technology in use is outdated, this however, does not match with the current/ongoing changes in science and technology. Further the industry lacks trained manpower. This position is further aggravated by the lack of opportunity to upgrade their knowledge through short courses, seminars or workshops, to come to terms with new technological changes. It is recommended that higher learning institutions initiate or include printing and publishing courses in the teaching curriculum so as to create skilled manpower in this area. Organizations should further develop their staff to upgrade in order to meet the challenges prevailing in the field, further it is recommended to restructure operations and adapt new modern technology that in order to apply ICT.
