Participation and performance of girls in complementary basic education programme: the case of Temeke municipal council in Dar es Salaam region, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Mbwillo, Rehema Japhet
The study aimed at exploring the participation and performance of girls in Complementary Basic Education programme. The Case of Temeke Municipal Council in Dar-es-salaam Region, Tanzania. Four research questions guided the study. Five Complementary Basic Education centres and the surrounding communities were involved in the study. The total number of respondents was 72, who included Municipal Primary Education Officers, Municipal Adult Education Coordinators, Community Municipal Development Officer, Ward Education Coordinators, Centre Leaders, facilitators, parents as well as Complementary Basic Education programme learners. A qualitative research design was the predominant paradigm employed in collecting and analysing data. Data were gathered through interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussion, documentary review and observation. The findings of the study showed that girls in cohort I participated fully in COBET centres while those in cohort II participated lowly. Some parents had a high level of participation in developing girls through COBET programmes. Other parents showed negative altitude towards girls’ education in COBET centres. The study concluded that the community members’ participation in motivating girls to participate in COBET centres in Temeke Municipal Council is low due to their low income and understanding; hence some community members do not value education for girls in COBET programme. It is recommended that the quality COBET centres should be improved by supplying enough facilitators and teaching learning materials to enhance good learning environment.
