Contribution of TANAPA support projects and challenges towards improvement of community livelihood: a case of TANAPA adjacent village communities in Arumeru district, Arusha region
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Mbwana, Neema
This study assessed the contribution of TANAPA to community initiated projects (CIP) and its challenges towards improvement of livelihood of TANAPA adjacent village communities in Arumeru District focusing on Ngongongare and Ngarenanyuki villages. Different methods were used for data collection namely; focus group discussion (FGD), key informant interviews, household interviews, participatory field observations and documentary search. Findings from the study revealed that majority of the respondents (85.6%) acknowledged benefiting from TANAPA SCIP including access to education and health services as major contribution to the community livelihood. The study also observed that about 90% of the respondents asserted that the projects are initiated by the community and were community’s priority projects. Hence they perceive it as important towards improvement of their living. However, it was revealed that the implementation of the TANAPA supported community initiated projects (SCIP) has been faced with various challenges including inadequate contribution from TANAPA, political interference and partial involvement of local people in the project initiation, lack of transparency, unknown SCIP criteria for selection of the intended project and insufficient Outreach Warden. The study concluded that despite the above challenges, TANAPA SCIP to the large extent, supported livelihood of the communities in terms of income, health and education. The study recommended for an increase of SCIP, promotion of transparency, accountability and enhances community participation for sustainability of the CIP. Also more Outreach Warden should be recruited to match with Outreach Program activities.
