    Teacher motivation and student academic performance in secondary schools

    The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of teacher motivation on student academic performance in Secondary Schools in Tanzania. The research focused on better and poorly performing schools, to investigate if better or poor academic performance was due to teacher motivation. Data were collected using an interview schedule administered to MOEC Officer, heads of schools and teachers as well as focused group discussion to students. Other methods included unstructured observation and documentary review There were 77 respondents (1 MOEC Officer; 4 heads of schools: 24 teachers and 48 students). Qualitative data was subjected to content analysis in order to extract relevant information and data while quantitative data was categorized and presented in tabular form. The findings revealed that teachers' salaries affected students' academic performance because when salaries are low and paid late, teachers' morale for teaching was reduced. Second, in schools with availability of teaching/learning materials and accommodation for teachers, teaching was done efficiently and effectively hence enhancing students' academic performance Third, the findings indicated that opportunities for advancement and promotion for teachers were few in both poor and better performing schools. Students' academic performance was influenced by these factors. Fourth different factors for better school academic performance were identified. These were committed teachers and students, availability of teaching/learning materials, good leadership, students' discipline, attractive and conducive school environment On the basis of the above findings it was concluded and recommended that the government and other stakeholders should put teachers' needs and perspectives at the center of the decision-making. They should review promotion policies, salary incentives and fringe benefits package for teachers. Lastly, nether research should be done in other secondary schools and other levels of Education in order to find out the impact of teachers' motivation on work performance
