Performance comparison between local and foreign contractors and lessons to be learnt
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Mbuya, Elinorata
The Cl in Tanzania has gone through a series of transformation since independence. In the course of time, it has experienced low and high times but its performance has generally remained low. Recently, there is an intense competition and a growing pressure to compete globally in all industries, the Cl inclusive. In fact, the nature of the production process for construction products, and its distinct/unique characteristics, subject it in a much more competing position, than say, manufacturing industries. The study has measured and compared the standard of performance for different categories of contractors, based on suitable performance indicators proposed by professionals, and which are acceptable and agreeable by the key players: consultants, clients and contractors. Further, the study has established a sub-standard performance for most local contractors, which could be the reason for local contractors’ difficulty in accessing job opportunities. Apart from that, donor conditions associated with donor aids and grants, to some extent limit job availability for local contractors. Bottlenecks for this kind of situation has been identified from the survey and recommendations suggested for improving the situation.
