Mathematical modelling of the role of public health education programme on HBV transmission dynamics
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Mayar, Mwamini
In this dissertation, deterministic mathematical models are formulated and analysed to assess the impact of public health education programme campaign on the dynamics of HBV. The model has been analysed for the existence of disease free and endemic points and their stability. It has been shown that the disease free equilibrium point is asymptotically stable when the effective reproduction number is less than unity and unstable when an effective reproduction number is greater than unity. The model analysis shows that public health education programme campaign has sub-stantial impact on eradication of HBV. It is noted that endemicity decreases after implementing public health education programme campaign. In order to reduce the spread of disease the rate offering public health education programme campaign should be high. Numerical results and sensitivity analysis are carried out to support the analytical results and to determine the impact of parameters influencing the dynamics of the disease. It is indicated that in the presence of public health education programme campaign, the number of uneducated susceptible individuals decreases while the number of educated susceptible individuals increases. This implies that transmission of infection decreases when people are aware of the disease, hence the number of acute and chronic infected individuals decrease as well.
