    Individuals attitude toward pensions and early withdrawal from social security schemes in Tanzania: a case of selected commercial banks’ employees

    This study is an exploratory study. It examined individuals attitude towards pensions and early withdrawal from social security Funds in Tanzania. The study was conducted from 125 selected staff of various commercial banks in Dar es Salaam. Both primary and secondary data were collected and analysed by use of descriptive analysis, and variables in conceptual framework were tested by the use of spearman’s rho correlation. The study findings reveals that Pensions Funds members are accessing withdrawal benefits to meet financial hardship, setting outstanding loans, building the house, purchasing vehicles and handling medical expenses, the study also shows that members have intention to withdrawal from Pension schemes of because of negative attitude towards pension benefits. The negative attitude is due to the adequacy of benefit provided it the old age in terms of numbers and amount, lack of proper coordination and trust on pension schemes, low habit to save for retirement and delays in computation and payment of retirement benefits. The study concluded that there is positive relationship between individual attitudes towards pension and members’ intention to withdrawal from pension schemes prematurely. The study recommends government intervention to strengthen the social security sector and establish strong policy and systems which will improve monitoring and tracking of the social security members, establish continuous education programs that emphases on saving habits and consequences of premature withdrawal from the pensions schemes.
