The role of health management information system (HMIS) in enhancing provision of health services in Kinondoni municipal council.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Matayi, Godwill
This study examined the extent to which the Health management information system (HMIS) has improved the provision of Health Services •in Kinondoni Municipality. Specifically, the study examined health information needs of Kinondoni Municipality, determining the impact of HMIS on enhancing provision of health services, examining HMIS setbacks in improving the provision of health services, and recommending ways in which HMIS could be improved. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse qualitative data. Findings of the study showed that HMIS made an important contribution in enhancing the provision of health service as it helps in collecting accurate/ quality data, improving the quality of care in health service delivery enabling health workers to make decisions after situational analysis, and improving working conditions, infrastructure and equipment. Findings further showed that data was poorly recorded and stored, too many registers needed to be filled in, an inadequate number of health workers who are trained in HMIS, and that some important data/ information was missing. It is recommended that the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) should do the following: provide training in HMIS implementation for all health workers, ensure that all HMIS activities are computerized to all levels, enhance supportive supervision to make sure that data is correctly and effectively utilized and allocate more funds to HMIS activities. The existing HMIS can be used for enhancing the provision of health services and as a tool to monitor the effects of managerial and political that affect different locations decision. The experience of Kinondoni so far has shown that this is already possible.
