    Assessment of factors hindering competitiveness and trade performance of manufacturing industries in Zanzibar

    The purpose of this dissertation was assessment of factors hindering competitiveness and trade performance of manufacturing industries in Zanzibar. A sample of 88 respondents categorized into staff (52) and management team (36) from 20 Zanzibar manufacturing industries were selected. The study has provided the conceptual framework upon which competitive manufacturing industry is based as well as the type of activities involved. The survey method was used as the research design; the method of proportional allocation was used as the research design; the method of proportional allocation was used to identify the sample drawn from two strata of manufacturing industries (1- 9 and 10+ establishments). Data analysis was done by using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 11.0 for windows and Microsoft office excel 2003 programs. Hypotheses were formulated and tested by using Chi – Square Test and ANOVA (F – Test) and relationships were obtained by cross tabulation. Findings revealed that tax regime, improper human resource management and lack of subsidization were among critical factors hindering competitiveness of manufacturing industries in Zanzibar. In general, findings revealed that the existing environment is not conductive for industrial development in Zanzibar. It is recommended that government scheme for finance should be reviewed as well as to establish funding agency/agencies that will support bank loans that will support manufacturing industries for innovation or enter into new markets. A productivity and competitiveness council should be established to develop productivity culture.
