Assessment of supervision support services for effective functioning of primary schools in Ilala Municipality
(University of Dar es salaam, 2010) Massam, Mary Elioforo
This study assessed primary school supervision support services in order to examine their effectiveness on proper functioning of schools. The main objective of the study was to assess supervision support services in primary schools on frequency of visits, administrative aspects, pedagogical problems, and the way teachers as well as supervisors perceived and responded to those services. A case study strategy was used using a sample of 176 respondents drawn from 8 sample schools and 8 school supervisors all from Ilala Municipal Council. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observation, Focus group Discussion and Documentary review. Findings revealed that the current school supervision had no real effect in enhancing quality of education on part of administrative improvement. In addition, it was revealed that school supervision was confronted by many problems such as heavy workload, lack of facilities and poor working condition. It was recommended that both school supervisors and supervised schools should play their role on finding alternative as strategies for effective school functioning. Respondents themselves recommended internal and closet school supervision where ward education coordinators could make follow-up visits after external school supervisors’ visits as well as teachers within schools supervising each other.
