    Modeling of high temperature gasification process of ultra-fine coal particles

    This thesis was devoted to develop a high temperature coal gasification model and establish characteristics of Tanzanian coal for energy utilization. The characteristic properties of Tanzanian coal were established by undertaking proximate and ultimate analyse. The results obtained by proximate analysis show that the Tanzanian sub-bituminous coal has the following characteristic values; moisture content 3.21%, volatile matters 28.30%, fixed carbon 43.65% and ash 24.84% and heating value 27.60 MJ/kg. The ultimate analysis results for the coal revealed to constitute; carbon 82.09%, hydrogen 5.07%,, oxygen 9.97% nitrogen 1.7% and sulphur 1.16%. The analysis made by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) for coal particles decomposition occurring between 350-750oC. A mathematical model for high temperature coal gasification based on CFD technique was able to predict temperature and velocity distribution inside the gasifier. Furthermore, the model was able to predict syngas concentration insider the gasifier. The overall results show that syngas production process in the gasifier is improved by increase of temperature. The results from these investigations provide resource data in guiding the design and optimization of entrained flow coal gasifier for high temperature gasification processes.
