    The state of information literacy in selected private secondary schools in Dar es salaam region, Tanzania

    This study examined the state of information literacy in selected private secondary schools in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania by looking at the availability of information literacy programmes in secondary schools; methods used to impart information literacy (IL skills to students; the challenges they face and strategies that could be used to enhance effectiveness of IL programmes in secondary schools for students to become independent learners. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam Region, and involved four private secondary schools, namely: Alpha, Loyola, St. Anthony and St. Joseph Secondary schools. The respondents of this study were one hundred and forty four (144): hundred students, twenty eight classroom teachers, four heads of schools and twelve library staff. Primary data were collected through a survey method using the structured standardized questionnaire, face –to –face interviews, focus group discussion and observation. Secondary data was collected through documentary review by consulting a variety of printed and non-printed sources. Qualitative data were analysed through content analysis while SPSS program was used in analysing quantitative data. The findings revealed that the most popular method used to impart IL skills to students was library orientation. The study revealed that factors which constrain IL programmes in secondary schools being: lack or poor cooperation between librarians and teachers, inadequate IT facilities, inadequate library skills, lack of awareness on the importance of IL in schools, IL is not integrated in the subjects, poor searching skills, inability of students to evaluate information accessed over the Internet, lack of IL policy, inadequate librarians, inadequate or exclusion of IL in the timetable and inadequate financial resources. The study recommends cooperation between classroom teachers and library staff in implementation of IL programmes; improvement of methods of running IL programmes; change of teaching approach in advanced secondary schools from teacher centred to student centred approach and formulation of IL policy in secondary schools.
