    The effect of health expenditure on health outcomes in Tanzania

    This study examined the effect of health expenditure on health outcomes in Tanzania. Three specific objectives were addressed; to determine the effect of household health expenditure on the under-five deaths, to examine the influence of social economic factors on healthcare utilization and to compare the health outcomes between rural and urban. The study used data from Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2015-2016, from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The Probit model was used for estimation. The results indicate that after controlling for endogeneity, as the expenditure on health increases, the probability of the uder-five deaths and is statistically significant. Second, social economic factors such as education, age, family size, place of residence, health insurance and employment status also play a crucial role in the determination of healthcare utilization and hence health outcomes. The health outcomes are further better in urban areas than in rural, as the probability of the under-five deaths is higher in rural than in urban, the findings of this study imply that some policies should be formed and that Tanzania must make efforts in addressing the quest stated to achieve better health outcomes so as to ensure long term growth of the country. Further, it is essential to invest more on education as its effect is stronger than that of household health expenditure, towards improving the health outcomes.
