Exploring constraints and challenges facing women using ARVS treatment in Tanzania: a case study of Arusha Municipality
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2009) Marandu, Doreen Wilson
This study presents findings on women access to and utilization of antiretroviral treatment. The study was carried out in Arusha Municipality to investigate the constraints and challenges women faces in accessing antiretroviral treatment (ARVs). Also patterns and trends of women accessing and utilization of to ARVs medicine in selected health facilities in 2006 was examined. Also, the proportion of women accessing ARVs treatment in selected health facilities in Tanzania, procedures used to provide ARVs medicine for People Living With HIV and AIDS and women living with HIV/AIDS self perception towards ARVs use and community’s perception towards women utilizing ARVs were assessed. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to understand the varying feelings of women and community towards using ARVs as well as cultural attitudes toward ARVs use. The quantitative approach made the study capable of reflecting on empirical issues. The findings confirmed that women were constrained in accessing ARVs freely. Perceptions, feelings and social economic relationships that fueled stigmatization were recorded as main hindrance. The study concluded that there are some issues to, address in order for women living with HIV and AIDS to access and utilize ARVs without constraints and challenges. Recommendations are made to start bylaws, personal opinions from clients to be heard and considered, more education on ARVS and enhance psychological help to women living with HIV and AIDS.
