Willingness to switch from charcoal to alternative energy sources in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Mapunda, Gloria
Charcoal is a primary cooking energy for the majority of urban population in Tanzania especially in Dar-es-salaam. The increasing demand of charcoal has influenced unsustainable production that has adversely resulted to deforestation and air pollution. The study uses Dar-es-salaam as a case study driven by the fact that, it constitutes a higher share of charcoal consumption. Using a sample of 562 households, the study analyses main factors that influence people to shift from charcoal to alternative fuels, awareness on charcoal indoor air pollution and associated health problems as well as perception influencing charcoal consumption. Descriptive analysis shows that some households are still not aware of charcoal indoor pollution and associated health problems by 20 add 25 percent respectively. Also, some perceive charcoal as easier to use by 20 percent while others perceive the food tastes delicious by 5 percent. Furthermore, Logit regression analysis used to examine the factors that influence switching from charcoal to alternative fuels finds that, households’ head age, gender, occupation, expenditure, home ownership, convenience of charcoal and unreliability of modern fuels to be significant factors in explaining such transition. The study recommends policy improvements on the aspects of reliability of alternative fuels, affordability of alternative fuels, awareness programs as well as education as a way of facilitating the transition to modern fuels.
