The use of internet by secondary school teachers: a case study of twelve secondary schools in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2004) Mapunda, Heko Stanley
The study examined the level of knowledge and Internet usage of teachers in secondary schools in the process of enhancing the quality of teaching and learning at selected secondary schools in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam region. A combination of methods were used to collect data for this study including a questionnaire, face-to-face interviews and observation. The findings reveal that teachers' level of access to the Internet was very low, this being attributed to lack of or insufficient computers with Internet connectivity. For some of the schools, there was no computer with Internet connectivity. It was also found out that teachers were aware of the role the Internet could play in teaching and learning process, but the majority of them did not effectively use it for that purpose due to lack of access as well as lack of required skills in Internet use. It is recommended that the Ministry of Education and Culture should formulate a clear policy on the use of Internet in schools, should provide training to its teachers to ensure they have requisite skills and knowledge about the Internet. A well developed basic ICT infrastructure is also recommended to be available in teachers training institutes and secondary schools. This is critical in the overall use of ICT in the country. Areas for further research have also been proposed.
