Item Model development of PGA map based low-cost community earthquake early warning system using mems accelerometer sensors for South-Western Tanzania region(Unversity of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Manyele, Asinta NtindaIn recent years, communities dwelling in South Western Tanzania (SWTZ) have been shaken by moderate to large earthquakes without warnings. The Community Earthquake Early Warning Systems (CEEWS) are the Information Communication Technology (ICT) mediated tools so far acknowledged to mitigate earthquake disasters by providing the earthquake warnings when strong ground motion is expected. In this work, CEEWS that provides earthquake warnings based on predicted earthquake Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) map is proposed in South Western Tanzania (SWTZ) communities. The prediction of PGA shake maps (earthquake hazards) is by using PGA attenuation relationship equation proposed for the region and developed PGA mapping tool based on measurements of the first few seconds of the P-waves by Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers found in or USB connected to community owned computers and laptops across SWTZ. Testing the model via simulation of scenario earthquakes and field deployment of few sensors, the target predicted earthquake hazard levels were comparable to the reference model based on S-wave data, as well as the web published Shake Maps from on-line questionnaires. From the field observations, the quality of recorded data for computation of earthquake hazard features, and the observed mean data communication latency of 5.30 seconds to 7 seconds, demonstrated the other feasibility factors for establishing CEEWS across SWTZ.
