Musical enculturation of gogo children: ways gogo children acquire attitudes, knowledge and skills related to gogo instrumental music
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2012) Mandago, Paraphilious
This study examines the musical enculturation of Gogo children of Chamwino Ikulu in Dodoma, Tanzania. The main objective of the study was to provide an understanding of how Gogo children acquire attitudes and knowledge related to Gogo musical instruments, and to examine the procedures Gogo children undertake to acquire skills to play Gogo music instruments. The study is presented in six chapters. Chapter One provides a general introduction to the study, a statement of the problem to which the research addresses itself, the research objectives and the significance of the study. Chapter Two comments on literature related to the study, materials that have assisted the researcher to more clearly achieve his objectives. Chapter Three makes note of the methodology used by the researcher. Chapters Four and Five present and analyse data collected. Chapter Six, provides a summary of the study as well as conclusions and recommendations. The study found that the music enculturation process in the lives of Gogo children happens as they learn the agreements of Gogo cultural traditions. The findings reveal that Gogo children acquire their attitudes, knowledge and skills related to Gogo instrumental music through exposure to the culture by way of stories, personal experiences, and observations, and by the imitation of musician-teachers with whom they associate in early years of music development. Familiarization, observation and imitation are procedures the children appear to use to acquire the skills necessary to perform on Gogo music instruments.
