Opportunities and challenges of solid waste management: a case of Kinondoni municipal in Dar es salaam, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Manase, Flower
This study assessed opportunities and challenges of solid waste management in Kinondoni Municipal in Dar es Salaam City. Household questionnaire survey, key informants interview, focus group discussion and field observations were the methods used in data collection. Findings from the study show that there are numerous opportunities associated with the management of solid waste that can be used to resolve the challenges that hinders solid waste management sector in Kinondoni Municipal Council. The opportunities include economic development, employment, income generation, clean environment, and composting and energy recovery, technological improvement and enhanced scientific research on SWM. These opportunities can be harnessed only if solid waste management (SWM) is done properly and according to best practices of SWM hierarchy which include solid waste minimization, recycling, re-use, energy recovery and composting. The above opportunities can be attained if appropriate policies are put in place for SWM, enforcement of existing Solid Waste legislation and by-laws, environmental awareness and enforcement of environmental standards. The major SWM challenges in include inadequate solid waste managing approaches, inadequate environmental awareness, and inadequate enforcement of laws and policies on solid waste management. The SWM challenges in Kinondoni Municipal can be addressed when Dar es Salaam City Council, Kinondoni Municipal and local government authorities work closely and involve key stakeholders in SWM operations and ensures SWM principles and best practices are adopted and become key to SWM operations in the Municipal and other Municipalities in Dar es Salaam City.
