The impact of tourism on local community and SMES’ development in Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania
(University of Dar Es Salaam, 2013) Malipula, Richard George
The target of this study was to examine the impact of tourism operations on local community and SMEs development in Tanzania with a case study of Kilimanjaro Region. This is assumed to be very important in poverty eradication, the vice which has been persistent for quite long time and is yet to be addressed. Different theories were reviewed in order to develop the conceptual framework. The theories include that of outsourcing, leakages, comparative advantages, global value chain and linkages, to mention a few. The study mainly employed exploratory approach. Questionnaire as a tool of data collection was the main strategy used and it was supplemented by interview. The data regarding employment, business linkages and leakages from were collected and analyzed descriptively using the statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS). The research findings reveal that tourism operations in Kilimanjaro Region contribute to the development of local communities and SMEs. This means that the tourist hotels, tour operators and suppliers to tourist hotels, contribute to creating jobs and generate linkages of business to SMEs and local people. That is to say the tourism operations in Kilimanjaro Region contribute to the fight against poverty of the local people and country in general. The study recommends that more studies on the same subject matter be conducted in order to gain more knowledge on linkages and leakages of tourism activities. It employed a cross-sectional study. Future research could focus on undertaking longitudinal studies which could give more insights on contribution of tourism to the local community.
