The protection of refugees and asylum seekers in mixed migration flows: a case study of Somalis and ethiopians from the horn of Africa
(The university of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Makoye, Magembe
This study investigated the protection of refugees and asylum seekers from the Horn of Africa who arrive in mixed migration flows in Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Coast region in Tanzania. These three regions were used as case studies to represent other parts of the country. The study aimed at finding out the reasons for the flow of refugees and asylum seekers from the Horn of Africa and how they are handled by the responsible authorities, organizations and the smugglers. It also focused on the means of transport and the routes used. The concern on the measures to curb the situation is not left out in the study. Both primary and secondary data were collected in the course of the study. Primary data were obtained through face to face interviewees with respondents. While secondary data was solicited from different sources read by the researcher. The study revealed that the reason for the unending flow of Somalis in Tanzania to other countries in the South is the prevailing war in Somalia. For Ethiopians, the reason for departure from their country is economic hardship and the desire to acquire better life abroad. It was also found that the transportation of these groups is carried out by well organized groups of smugglers who are networked all the way from the Horn to South Africa. Smugglers are not concerned with the protection of their clients but interested in the wealth they acquire out of this illegal business. There was a mixed response on the way refugees, asylum seekers and migrants were treated by the organs and authorities dealing with them. Others were satisfied while others were not. The general solution to the problem is the International Community to intervene in the Somali conflict and find a permanent solution. The African Union also has to take action to end the Somalia conflict. The Ethiopian government has to take measures to end the extreme poverty among its people. It has been also recommended that governments need to take stern measures to end smuggling “business”.
