    Information management in the district councils; a case study of Kibaha and Dodoma rural district councils

    The District Councils form the base of the Government operations and administration. They daily generate abundant of information that needs an efficient system to capture, organise, store and disseminate to various users to enhance performance. The general objective of this study was to asses the management of information in district councils with the aim of highlighting the flawed areas for improvement. To examine this, a case study of two district councils namely Dodoma Rural and Kibaha were chosen. The study involved sixty staff who deal with information (administrators and technical) selected randomly, thirty from each council. Secondary and primary data was collected using questionnaire as a major method of data collection, supplemented by interview administered to executives in both councils. The study findings reveled that there are problems of information management in the councils triggered by poor economic situation which has affected acquisition of equipment needed to manage information. Finally, the study came out with recommendations which will help improve information management in the Councils. These include installation of a reliable data bank; establishing a training programme and information centers; streamlining information flow and sensitizing the community on importance of information.
