Implication of wildlife management areas to community livelihoods: a case of Ipole Wildlife Management areas, Sikonge District, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) Maghembe, Emmanuel
This study examined the implication of WMA to communities’ livelihoods in Ipole village, Sikonge district. Household questionnaires survey, focused groups, discussions. Field observations and literature review from different sources were used in data collection to complement each other. Findings from the study have shown that the WMA play important role in supporting the community livelihood in Ipole village. It was revealed that the major livelihood opportunities accrued from the WMA as reported by the respondents are beekeeping (17.3%), wildlife hunting (15.4%) and fishing (13.5%). Minor livelihood activities included timber production, medicinal plants, wild edible plants and source of income through employment as casual labour. The community access livelihood resources through direct harvesting in the WMA or buying within the village. The study further revealed that there are some management challenges facing WMA , including invasion of livestock keepers into the WMA for grazing and water sources as well as for settlement, illegal harvesting of timber and poaching, lack of equipment and tool for field patrols, inadequate transparency on wildlife revenues, inadequate number of staff to provide training. The study recommended strengthening local people’s participation and transparency, insisting of modern bee keeping methods and discouraging illegal hunting, ensuring access to WMA resources by the lower income community in order to reduce natural resources degradation in the wildlife management area.
