Business process re-engineering implementation efforts in developing countries: a case of UNDP Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Maerere, Iluminate Rutageruka
The mam objective of this research (study) was to evaluate the various factors attributable to implementation of the business process reengineering (BPR) as an important strategy for internal Transformation aimed to improve its capacity, efficiency and accountability in UNDP country offices, UNDP Tanzania being one of them. The study used a structured questionnaire to gather data from a sample of 100 staff members of UNDP Tanzania and other UN agencies operating in Tanzania. The study also employed simple frequencies in the analysis of descriptive part of the research. Pearson Correlation and Regression analysis were used in testing the hypothesis developed from a conceptual model. The study reports that UNDP was able to achieve success in the implementation of BPR. The study reveals the importance of the organizational support in implementation of BPR. Top management must visibly demonstrate its full support and commitment to the BPR implementation at the outset, through effective planning, control and communication mechanisms. The study further found that organizational support plays of a pre-condition for the other factors. When the organizational support is high, the degree in respect of productivity, financial performance and quality of services is also higher. The study concluded that implementation of BPR should be dynamic and it is important to emphasize, that through the process the actions and the value of them should be reviewed so that corrective measure can be taken if something doesn't work. The study recommends that successful implementation of large-scale information systems requires enough funding for the project from the beginning to the end.
