    The changing role of the press in a liberalized economy of Tanzania.

    This study investigated the role of the press with a special focus on newspapers and how such newspapers have changed since Tanzania embarked on liberalism policy in national development. The study was done in five chapters. The study was done in five chapters. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam and involved 80 respondents from the media circles, who either filled questionnaire, were interviewed or were involved in small group discussions. The study also made use documentary analyses. The data collected is reported both qualitatively and quantitatively. The study findings are also reported through the proving of hypotheses supported by quotations sources. Among its findings was the fact that although the roles are known by the professionals within the press industry in Tanzania, press is dedicated to serve the profit motive without regard to ethics so as to survive as well as to serve the owners and big advertisers. The press is also in dilemma on which direction to take between the servings the society on one hand making profits on the other hand. At the end are recommendation and conclusions that, among other things, recommends that the found freedom should be constitutionally guaranteed at the state level and should go in hand with a public responsibility approach on the part of practitioners. The study also recommends on the need to have a powerful media regulatory institution to steer the press in the right direction, the need to have public press that is financed by taxpayer`s money as well as the need to increase circulation to remote areas and improved journalism training system.
