(University of Dar es Salaam, 2006) Macha, Lilian Joseph
In Tanzania, there are ethnic groups of people who are known for being more business oriented than others. It is said that certain types of people are more entrepreneurial than others. These are Wachaggas, wakingas Asian and Pemba. One of these ethnic groups is Chagga people from Kilimanjaro region. Certain groups in the region however are noted to be more entrepreneurial than others who are people of Kibosho descent. This study investigated the group of Kibosho descent. This dissertation focused on Chagga people of Kibosho descent on their entrepreneur behaviours. The surveyed involved 90 Kibosho entrepreneurs in Dar es Salaam Region. It sought to pinpoint behavioural characteristics and reasons that accounted for their business success and sustainability. Results show that social-cultural factors have a great influence on this group of people. They include religion, the habit of maintaining two homes and preference of male children. Within these groups not all behave in the same way. It is concluded that, sustainable entrepreneurs play very vital roles in enhancing the productive capacities of individuals and societies. They are a critical part of the foundation for a viable economy in the country as they create jobs by generating incomes that sustain lives.
