Factors affecting companies listing to stock exchange market in Tanzania: the case of Dar es Salaam stock exchange.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Mabada, Gloria
The aim of this study was to analyse factors which affect company listing to stock exchange in Tanzania, the case being Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE). The data were collected from 100 respondents. This included 25 DSE staff and 25 company owners and staff. These were purposely selected from Kinondoni municipality, 25 from Temeke municipality and 25 from llala municipality. The study was conducted in an effort of finding the empirical evidence of the theory of efficiency market hypothesis and hence, adding a new literature on few existing literature on African stock market. The data collected were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS- 12.0 version). The general implications of the findings of this study regarding the efficiency of DSE is that the technical analysis can be valuable in the market as the stock prices of the company investigated do not fully reflect available past information therefore, the use of past trading information could be of value. For individual investors in DSE these findings implies that investors can trade off between passive strategy (i.e. the buy and hold strategy) and active strategy. For the highly efficient stock market, investors do not have much option to choose between active and passive strategy as it is believed that the active strategy is of no value in highly efficient markets. However, since the results show that DSE is weak from inefficient market investors it can opt for active strategy and make fortune.
