An investigation on the teaching and learning of ICT subject in primary schools in Tanga city
(University of Dar es Salaam,, 2012) Lyatuu, Jane Gilleard
This study investigated the teaching and learning of ICT subject in primary schools. Specifically it aimed to investigate on the availability and adequacy of ICT subject material resources for the teaching and learning of ICT subject, to examine the types and effectiveness of teaching and learning methods used in the teaching and learning of ICT subject in primary schools and finally, to identify challenges faced by ICT subject teachers and pupils in the teaching and learning of ICT subject in primary schools. The study used mainly the qualitative approach adopting case study design. It was conducted in four primary schools in Tanga City Council with a sample of 46 respondents categorised into head teachers, class six ICT subject teachers, class six pupils and the district primary school inspector. Respondents were obtained through purposive, simple random and systematic random sampling procedures. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, observation, and documentary reviews. Analysis of data was subjected to thematic analysis while some quantifiable data were presented using tables and photographs. Findings of this study have revealed that there is lack or acute shortages of ICT subject infrastructure including computer rooms and electricity as well as ICT subject materials. ICT subject teachers are also not trained in ICT content and pedagogy. This had led to poor methods of teaching ICT subject, as it was dominated more by lectures than practical demonstrations. Challenges faced by ICT subject teachers and pupils include: lack of ICT subject materials, poor infrastructure, inadequacy of ICT material utilization, untrained ICT subject teachers, limited time and periods of ICT subject, and lack of motivation to teachers and pupils. The study recommends the establishment of teacher training programmes on ICT and computer studies through pre-service and in-service training for effective teaching of ICT. In addition, all public and private primary schools should be equipped with ICT materials and infrastructures. Furthermore, another study is recommended involving other districts in the country in order to have a wider understanding of the problem for making improvement in decisions including policy implications.
