The influence of leadership styles on staff motivation in community secondary schools in Kilosa district, Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2018) Lyaniva, Gilbert Daniel
This study examines the nature of the influence of leadership styles on staff motivation in community secondary schools in Kilosa District, Tanzania. In order to achieve the intended results three objectives were developed: Firstly, to examine the nature and extent to which leadership style influences participation of community members in the management of school tasks. Secondly, to examine the nature and extent to which leadership style influences the confidence level of community members. Thirdly, to examine the nature and extent to which leadership style influences the level of cooperation with community members in addressing challenges at workplaces. Qualitative and Quantitative research design was used in order to obtain a broad set of data from the targeted population which consisted of four (4) community secondary schools, forty (40) teachers, sixty four (64) students, and twenty five (25) key informants. And the data were collected through in depth interviews, structured interviews, document reviews and direct observation. The study findings revealed that democratic and dictatorial leadership styles were used interchangeably as they had significant influence on staff motivation. It is indicated that democratic leadership style enhanced staff motivation and consequently improved the performance of school tasks. In contrast, dictatorial leadership style had negative influence on staff motivation and hence it hindered the performance of school tasks. Therefore, it is recommended that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and President’s Office Regional Administrative and Local Government should put much emphasis on leadership development to motivate head teachers through deployment of democratic leadership style. This will ensure positive outcomes of the performed school tasks.
