The decline of coffee prices and farmers` income diversification strategies:a case study of Rombo District in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Lyakurwa, Michael Felisian
The aim of this study was to investigate households` coping and/or income diversification strategies after the collapse of income from coffee. The study further sought to examine the determinants of possible successful income diversification in Rombo district. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were employed in this study. The study findings showed that the coping and hence diversification strategies adopted by people in Rombo Doistrict after the decline of incomes from coffee were survival strategies. These satrategies have not been effective in sheltering households from the adverse impacts of decline of incomes from coffee. Empirical evidence shows that there are factors that determine households` capacity to cope/diversify successfully which include past income levels, age, gender, land size, access to credit and education and training. This study recommends that the current efforts to revive the coffee crop in the District should go hand with intensive investments in diversification projects of altenative cash crops and nonfarm activities. At the same time, households` capacity to diversify should be enhanced through credit provision that favour the most poor. Investiment in education and training especially through extension services vocational training should be done.
