The effectiveness of solid waste management practices in Tanzania: a case study of markets in Dar es Salaam city
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2008) Lwanga, Selestine Carlos
This study assessed the effectiveness of solid waste management practices in selected markets in Dar-es-Salaam city using a framework of ecological waste minimization and economic benefits perspective. Specifically the study focused on identifying the activities of selling products that generated different types of waste, and quantities of waste generated at IFMC, Mwenge and Stereo markets. The study also assessed the adequacy of solid waste management practices in maintaining sanitary conditions at the selected markets by examining the roles of different actors involved. On the findings, the study revealed that various products were sold at the markets including the selling of fresh agricultural products, manufactured goods, handicrafts equipment and items for constructional work. These products generated biodegradable, non - biodegradable and hazardous wastes. Also, the study revealed a mismatch between solid waste generation, collection and final disposal. Therefore, it was recommended that in order to have efficient and effective solid waste management practices and do away with the said mismatch, there was a need to focus on how to minimize waste generation from the source and reduce its impact on the urban environment and people's environmental conditions and health. Further, the adoption of this strategy was found to be an important tool for ensuring waste reduction, creation of environmentally sound waste management practices and achievements of natural resource conservation and pollution prevention at the city markets.
