    Knowledge of sign language and the performance of students with hearing impairment in secondary schools

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between knowledge of sign language among teachers and the performance of students with hearing impairment in secondary schools. The study was conducted in two in two districts, namely Ilemela and Musoma. The sample involved sixty respondents including two head masters, fourteen teachers and fourty four students with hearing impairments. The data collection method included questionnaires and interviews. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis while quantitative data were analyzed through SPSS and presented in tables and figures. The study findings revealed that, students with hearing impairment was caused by teachers` failure to use sign language in teaching/leaning processes, which laid the ground for most of students with hearing impairment to fail to understand important concept of the lesson. Also difficult in academic achievement among students with hearing impairment was triggered by the students` negative attitudes, which they formed towards teachers who were not using sign language in teaching/learning. The study concluded that the whole teaching and learning process as well as academic performance of students with hearing impairment in secondary schools was highly impacted by poor knowledge of sign language among teachers. The study recommends that, in every school where deaf students are located, sign language trainings and seminars should be conducted to all teachers so as to impart them with the skills of sign language. The government should set clear policies should set clear policies to emphasize the use of sign language.
