    Factors prohibiting women’s participation in political leadership: a case study of Kinondoni municipal council

    Tanzania is a society that believes in the equality, rights and freedom of all people. The belief is indicated in the constitution of the united republic of Tanzania, which emphasizes equality of all people, respect for humanity, the right to justice and equality before the law. However, it is important to note that very few women in Tanzania participate in leadership and decision-making process. The above situation prompted me to conduct this study, which aimed at investigating factors that prohibit women from running for political leadership positions. The study examined the social, economic and political backgrounds of women political aspirants, challenges and constraints they faced when running for councilors positions and factors which prohibit women from running for leadership positions. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research methods that made use of both primary and secondary data. Ninety- two (92) respondents were involved in the study and the sample included candidates who contested for councilor positions in the 2005 General elections and members from the public Overall, the findings revealed that women’s low level of education, lack of political power, low economic capabilities and patriarchal ideology prohibited women from running for political leadership. The study recommended that, it was imperative for the society to overcome these barriers. Moreover, the study recommended that actors such as the government, NGOs and CSO should design and implement gender sensitive tools to advocate women’s participation in politics.
