An assessment of the effectiveness of monetary policy in curbing inflationary pressure in Tanzania: 1970-2014 The AutoRegressive Distribution Lag (ARDL) Approach
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2017) Luoga, Peter
This study examined the effectiveness of monetary policy in curbing inflationary pressure in Tanzanian economy over the period of 1970 to 2014. The relationship between inflation and monetary impulses are explored by employing the autoregressive distribution lag approach (ARDL) on annually time series data (1970-2014). The unit root test shows all variables are differed stationary. The cointegration test indicates that there exists a long-run relationship between inflation and vector regressors employed. The estimated results show that for the period covered, interest rate, exchange rate and money supply are the major causes of inflation in Tanzania. It was also observed that even though in short-run increased income elevates inflation, appropriate utilization of growth would trim down inflation. The money supply variable shows a significant positive impact on inflation in both short-run and long-run. This means that Tanzanian inflationary situations is driven by monetary impulses. Monetary policy as the measure to control inflationary pressure backed-up appropriate fiscal policies are incumbent for structural and economic stabilization.
