The impact of east African community custom union on Tanzania agricultural trade lows in the region
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Lugwisha, Theresia
This study examined the impact of East African Community Custom Union on Tanzania agricultural trade flow. It used both secondary data from UNCTAD stat database and primary data collected from 50 questionnaires administered to the exporters of Agricultural products in Tanzania. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using the SPSS software and the frequency tables deduced from the analysis. Furthermore, trade complementarities index was established to explore potentials of trade among EAC member countries. The findings revealed that there has been increasing trend of the exports from Tanzania to the EAC members and that the customs procedure, infrastructure, internal barriers and boarder sharing are the key agricultural trade flow determinants with the common language and historical ties being neutral as determinants of the agricultural trade flow. Also findings on trade complementarities within EAC members revealed that there is a potential for trade due to the establishment of Custom Union and the elimination of trade barriers, therefore trade has been increasing. The study recommended that there is a need to encourage infrastructure development, and thus breaking the infrastructure divide and emphasizing on the trade facilitation projects so as to ease trade flow in the region. Additionally, it was recommended that emphasis should be made on trading of agricultural products with better comparative advantage so as to avoid value deterioration of the exports.
