Socio-economic and demographic factors associated with housing condition in Tanzania a case Study of Lindi Region
(University of Dar es salaam, 2020) Lugali, Laurence
The main objective of this study was to determine the socio-economic and demographic factors associated with housing condition in Tanzania, a case study of Lindi region. The specific objectives of this study were two; first, to determine the associations between housing condition, quality of roofing, wall and floor material and socio-economic or demographic variables and second was to compare the housing condition between male and female headed households. The study used the 2012 TPHC data from long questionnaire with a sample size of 88,744 households. The IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software was used in performing data analysis. The analysis included both descriptive and inferential statistics. In descriptive statistics frequency tables were presented while in inferential statistics the following techniques were used: Chi-Square test, logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression. From the study, it was seen that there was an association between housing condition, quality of roofing, wall and floor material and socio-economic or demographic variables. The following factors were found to be significant except for the association between quality of wall material and sex of head of household; household size, household type, ownership of main building, location of household, ownership of farm or land, occupation status, current economic activity, disability status, sex, education level, age and marital status of head of household. Also it was seen that there was a small difference in housing condition between households headed by males (45.6% very poor, 24.7% poor, 14.5% average and 15.2% good housing condition) and females (43.9% very poor, 26.2% poor, 14.8% average and 15.1% good housing condition).
