The attitudes of the University of Dar es Salaam community towards the transformation Programme
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2001) Lugalema, Deogratias D.
The purpose of this study was to investigate and to find out the attitudes of the University of Dar es Salaam community towards the transformation programme. The aspects that are given more attention encompass the effects of the following: increased students enrolment; pre-entry science programme for girls; space management and availability and measures taken to secure staff retention. The findings of this study indicated the following: i) Students were faced with the following problems; scarcity of space in classrooms/theatres; cheating in university exams and tests and the rarely conduction of tutorials. ii) The university community accepts the pre-entry science programme for girls and the transformation programme in totality iii) It was discovered that there was no institutional back up support for research and publications, junior academic staff were not satisfied with their consolidated salary while senior academic staff were partially satisfied. The researcher recommended that the university management should take some measures to reduce the salary gap between the senior and junior academic staff to ensure that there is no dissatisfaction to any of these groups. Finally, it was recommended that research on the attitudes of non-academic staff to be conducted to determine their support towards the transformation programme and a similar study be conducted in other two compuses of the UDSM: that is MUCHS and UCLAS
