Enhancing the quality of education through secondary education development plan (SEDP) in Mkuranga district, Tanzania
(Unversity of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Levery, Nivoneia Elinaza
This study aimed at investigating the extent to which Secondary Education Development Plan (SEDP 2004-2009) enhanced the quality of secondary Education in Mkuranga District. Objectives of the study were to examine the number of secondary school teachers and their professional qualifications; availability and quality of school infrastructure and adequacy of teaching and learning materials. The study involved 18 government secondary schools situated in Mkuranga District. There were 218 respondents to this study. Questionnaires, observation schedules and interviews were used as instruments of data collections. The study revealed that, there were qualified and unqualified teachers in all studied secondary schools; there were modern buildings with inadequate classrooms and classroom facilities; shortage of teachers and teachers’ houses, and laboratories. There were no libraries throughout the studied schools. Toilets were un-proportional to the school population. Also the study revealed that there were inadequate teaching and learning materials such as textbooks, maps, charts toys and models. It is recommended that, MoEVT and PMO-RALG should work collaboratively with objectives stated in SEDP 2004-2009 in order to improve the quality of secondary education in Tanzania.
