Child-labour in urban Tanzania: the case of Dar es Salaam, 1987
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1989) Lemoyan, Josephine Sebastian
This dissertation examines the involvement of children in household economic activities in urban Dar es Salaam. Two arguments are raised. First as opposed to countries where child labour is seen as moral and social problem, in Tanzania it is condoned and a very common phenomenon. Very limited information is available on the phenomenon and most is related to child-labour as a. rural problem. This dissertation argues that child-labour cuts across rural urban interface and therefore it is important to situate child-labour in socio-cultural household relations. Secondly, the urban household is not just a production unit; it also has reproduction functions where it reproduces the conditions for production in urban political economy. This thesis extensively documents and analyses possibilities of household based production activities yielding profit and capital growth. This situation is influenced by economic, political and ideological constraints/reinforcements in the production. In some households the possibility for enlarged production is blocked by low surplus value which cannot support capital accumulation. This is a consequence of lowly developed productive forces, a low amount of capital advanced in terms of labour force or functioning capital or the main problem of capital growth may be the failure to channel revenue into capital. The problem of child-labour and household production is situated in urban political economy. In this case, the economic structure reveals an articulation of capitalist and non-capitalist forms of production. Urban space is used as a means for securing production and reproduction of social relations of production. Household forms of production are transitional in nature and child labour therefore is specific to certain social formation. Lastly, household production contributes via articulation to the complexities of urban class structure.
