Students’ perception towards the use of condoms in preventing HIV/AIDS in selected catholic secondary schools in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Laswai, Francis Gasper
The study explored the level of knowledge of students in catholic secondary schools on condoms and condom use and identified the preventive measures suggested for the prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS. The study also examined the attitude of students towards the use of condoms and the relationship between perceived subjective norms and the intention to use condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. A cross section survey design centred on the triangulation approach was employed where purposive, random and stratified sampling procedures were used to select a sample of 514 participants for the study. Questionnaire, interviews, focus group discussions and document search were applied for gathering data that were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. The study revealed that there was high knowledge on condoms and low knowledge on condom use among the students in catholic secondary schools. It was also observed that there was no statistical significant relationship between the knowledge on condoms and grade level of students, and between the knowledge on condoms and the nature of schools. A statistically significant relationship was found (at 5 percent level, p = 0.043, n = 237) between grade level and knowledge on condom use. Also there was a statistically significant relationship (at 1 percent level, p = 0.000, n = 471) between the nature of schools and the level of knowledge on condom use. The study demonstrated that abstinence and faithfulness were the common preventive measures advocated for the catholic secondary school students. Moreover, students in catholic secondary schools showed a negative attitude towards condom use while the students in non catholic secondary schools demonstrated a positive attitude (at 1 percent level, p = 0.0000, n = 471) that showed a high statistically significant difference. The study recommends that the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) needs to promote abstinence and faithfulness in the school curriculum as the best preventive measures against HIV/AIDS. This study recommends for another study to check the influence of religions and other denominations (Catholic Church apart) on the intention to use condoms as a preventive measure against the spread of HIV/AIDS.
