Assessment of mobile money services in substituting cash usage in retail business in Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2013) Kyaruzi, Remigius
The objective of this research was to assess mobile phone money services in substituting cash usage in retail businesses in Tanzania. The study aimed at looking at factors that influence diffusion of mobile money services in Tanzania. Also the study sought to assess economic and social factors holding back adoption of mobile money services in business sector in Tanzania. It examined dominant goods and services transacted through mobile money services in Tanzania. In this study 120 questionnaire were distributed in Ilala Municipality and results revealed that 25 percent of respondents who engage in small retail businesses are standard seven leavers 31 percent form four or vocational training education levels, while graduates constitutes only 7.1 percent. It implies that most graduates seek only to be employed rather than self-employment. The study revealed that the use of the said services was mostly hindered by lack of formal training on the uses, lack of creativity by business owners and uncertainties of operating environment of service providers. In addition, such services are accepted in retail businesses at an increasing rate and that further campaigns will induce more usage. Most of self-employed business people are not well educated. As a result there was lack of creativity on how they do their business. Also it was observed that the service may be used as an alternative for unbanked population if security issues facing that industry are well addressed by government agencies together with service providers.
