    Chemical Constituents And Antimicrobial Activities Of Selected Aloe Species And Aloe Commercial Products

    Aloe species are plants with medicinal properties being reported worldwide. The present study investigated the chemical ingredients of three aloe species (A, mawii, A lateritia and A secundiflora) and 22 selected Aloe cera branded commercial products by comparing with ingredients of reference plant A vera furthermore, the study investigated the antimicrobial activities of the selected Aloe species extracts and solutions of the A vera products. The chemical profile analysis was done through TLC and GC/MS technique, after consecutive extraction with three solvents namely, petroleum ether, dichloromethane and methanol. TCL analysis revealed the presence of anthraquinones, terpenoids, sugars, coumarins and flavonoids on spraying with ethanolic potassium hydroxide and anisaldehyde. GC/MC of the Aloe species indicated the presence of 10 constituents while the A vera branded commercial products indicated 11 compounds that were also identified in both commercial products and aloe species included n-hexadecanoic acid (2.1) , octadecanoic acid(2.2), oleic acid methyl ester (2.6) 1-tetradecanol (2.14), methylpalmitate (2.18), tetratetracontane (2.19), 1-heneicosanol ( 2.20), pentatriacontane (2.24), n-nonadecanol-(2.28), nonacosane (2.52), dotriacontane (2.59) and methyl stearate (2.60) with varying percentage composition in extracts and products. An antimicrobial activity of the extract and commercial product was done against four bacteria namely, S aureus, E. coli, K. pneumoneae and S typhi and two fungal species namely, C. albicans and C. neoformans. The result revealed two commercial products namely, Nutrashine (AVC5) and Body luxe (AVL3) that inhibited the growth of both gram negative and gram-positive bacteria while Beckon (AVC2), Nutrashine (AVC5) and Natural aloe AVC6) inhibited the growth of two fungal species tested namely, C. albicans and C. neoformans.The products AVC5 and AVL3 indicated high activity against E colt and S typhi with 7.5% (v/v) and 12.5%(v/v) Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MICs), respectively. The AVC2 and AVC5 indicated antifungal activity with MIC 5% (v/v) MIC for C.neoformans and C. albicans, respectively. The investigated Aloe extracts were inactive against the tested bacteria and fungi at a concentration of 10 mg/ml. The results from this study will stimulate further research on Aloe species indigenous to Tanzania and unravel their potentials. The A.vera branded commercial products, AVC2, AVC5, AVC6 and AVL3 have shown promising activity against tested microbes, hence can be used to protect the skin against some skin infectious and fungi.
