    An assessment of water supply services on peoples’ livelihood of Tunduma town, Momba district, Tanzania

    This study was carried out to assess the impact of water supply services on livelihoods of people of Tunduma town. Owing to several factors, the problem of water access remains a multi-million challenge for families in urban areas and this had to be explained through assessing water issues that affect the livelihoods. Households remain far from water projects despite interventions that governments, NGOs and other agencies have put in place. The study had sought to address the following objectives: to examine the impact of rapid urban population growth in water supply services; to assess the impact of water scarcity on livelihood of people; and lastly, to evaluate the possible intervention measures of water supply services in Tunduma town. Primary and secondary data were collected using methods such as questionnaire survey, in depth interviews, direct observation and focus group discussions. Qualitative and quantitative research designs were employed in the study. About 114 household heads in both study streets were interviewed; they were selected through simple random sampling, while key informants and study streets were purposively selected. Qualitative data were subjected to content analysis and statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software version 16 and 20 were used to analyze quantitative data. Microsoft office excel 2007 was used to plot tables, graphs and pie charts so as to give frequencies and percentages, quantitative forms of data were presented in terms of tabular percentage. The study revealed that about 67.5% of household respondents are not connected to public pipe but also the study shows variations between streets as in areas of high income of Mwakakati, 90% of respondents are connected to public pipe while in areas of low income of Maporomoko about 94.3% are not connected to public pipe. Also, the study revealed that water shortage in the area is due to rapid population growth. There have been no any strategies taken by the government to overcome the problem of water scarcity in the area as a result some of the short term strategies were taken by individuals like drilling wells as well as harvesting rainwater that are not productive enough. It can be concluded that water shortage has impacted directly on the livelihood of Tunduma residents as its services seem to be unreliable, difficult to access and too expensive for many users. The study recommends that, concerted efforts by the government are needed for reaching low income urban communities.
