The management of fishery resources in the Tanzanian exclusive economic zone
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Kweka, Fidel
The study sets out to investigate the modus operandi of managing the fishery resources in the Tanzanian Exclusive Economic Zone. Indeed, the Convention on the Law of the Sea spells out, in clear terms, the measures that ought to be implemented if sustainable utilization of the resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone is to be realized. To what extent these measures have been implemented is yet to be seen. From the outset, it was found out that the management of fishery resources in Tanzanian Exclusive Economic Zone still has a long way to go. There is a lack of a centralized legal and institutional framework, inventory of the resources, adequate checks, regular control and surveillance over foreign fishing vessels. The study is based on the hypothesis that insufficient financial resources, inappropriate technology and inadequate cooperation on the part of coastal states have greatly reduced the effective implementation of management measures in the Exclusive Economic Zone. At the conclusion of its findings, the study recommends integrated regional management in the EEZ, financing viable projects aimed at stepping up technological abilities, restocking of up-to-date monitoring, control and surveillance equipment, and streamlining of the legal framework governing the legal relations in the EEZ.
