A total economic valuation of the mtanza- msona wetlands: an appreciation of wetlands in A local economy
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2007) Kwayu, Emmanuel Jonas
This study was undertaken in the Mtanza-Msona Village wetlands in Rufiji District. It aimed at assessing the Total Economic Value (TEV) of Mtanza-Msona village wetlands in a bid to show their importance to the people’s livelihoods and raise awareness for their conservation. The study employed structured interviews, in-depth interviews, field observations, discussions, and literature survey in data collection. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Microsoft Excel, and Statistical Software for Professionals (STATA) were used for data analysis. The study has revealed that the TEV of the Mtanza-Msona wetlands is substantial and being in the region of Tshs 392,645,833.74 per annum with a Present Value (PV) of Tshs 3,922,559,312.40 using a 10% discount rate and n = oo. The direct use values were Tshs 388,584,734.74 and the Willingness To Pay (WTP) for indirect use, optional and non-use values were Tshs 4,061,099 per year. The study also revealed that the household heads’ incomes and the land size owned were positive and significant determinants of the WTP for wetlands indirect use, optional and non-use values. In light of the findings, it is concluded that the wetlands contribute substantially not only to the livelihoods of Mtanza-Msona village but also to those outside the village. It is therefore recommended that the wetlands should be conserved in order for it to continue to sustain the livelihoods of those who benefit from it currently and for others in the future and local and national wetlands policies and strategies be revised to reflect this importance for biodiversity, ecologic functions and economic importance (livelihoods and poverty reductions).
