Item Strategic management of inventories in local governments: the case of municipal councils in Dar es Salaam city.(University of Dar es Salaam, 2004) Kunaga, JoashThis study is centered on the management of inventories in local governments in Dar es Salaam. Some local governments have no proper inventory management systems; thus there has been increased costs associated with poor management of inventories. Poor specifications, poor recording, poor storage and improper issuing of inventories contribute in the mismanagement of inventories. A low education level of the staff responsible is also thought to be one of the causes of the same. The main objectives of this study were, therefore, to assess the management of inventories in Ilala, Kinondoni and Temeke municipal councils; and to find out if the above mentioned possible causes of poor management of inventories do 'hold water'. A random sampling method was employed to interview 60 respondents. Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to process and analyze the data. Among the tested factors, poor specifications and improper issuing of goods were found to have some statistical association with poor management of inventories. Other factors like low education, improper issuing and poor storage had no significant impact on the poor management of inventories. It is recommended that the inventory stakeholders eg. Purchasing, production, transport, marketing, finance staff etc, should be involved in decision making with regard to specifications, ordering and testing of supplies made to them. there should also be proper recording of all inventory transactions made. Staff training is also highly recommended together with introduction of computerized inventory management systems where possible.
