    Lending environment in commercial banks: the case of Kenya commercial bank (t) ltd

    This study assessed the lending environment in commercial banks, a case study of Kenya Commercial Bank. The main objective of this study was to investigate lending environment in commercial banks. The specific objectives were: to assess the performance of lending in Kenya Commercial Bank considering the interest rate, repayment terms and procedures involved in getting a loan; to identify problems hindering effectiveness of lending in commercial banks; to establish performance measures on the repayment. The study was descriptive in nature and therefore qualitative research approaches were utilized. The sample for the study consisted of ten respondents at Kenya commercial Bank. Data were collected by the use of questionnaires, interviews and documentary review. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was employed to analyse quantitative data, and content analysis for qualitative data. The findings of the study revealed that banks are of the perception that borrowers have little knowledge on various procedures involved in securing loans including the importance of collaterals. It was also revealed that borrowers on their side are discouraged from borrowing from the banks because of the high interest rates charged on loans advanced. This study concluded that, the lending environment affects operations in commercial banks and by extension the amount of profitability. Prospective borrowers from the formal lending sector have difficulties meeting the sector’s lending requirements.
