Assessment of Fire Risk Management in Large Manufacturing Industries in Tanzania : the case study of industries in Dar es s alaam, City
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2014) Kiwelu, Agnes Elia
This study assessed fire risk management in large manufacturing industries in Dar es salaam City. The scope of the work covered fifty (50) large manufacturing industries selected through random sampling. The overall objective of the study was to assess fire risk management in large manufacturing industries in Tanzania, particularly in Dar es salaam city. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research procedures. The sample size was 150 respondents extracted from a population of 800 people. The methodology used in data collection included documentary reviews, interviews and questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using a computer program called Microsoft Office Excel. The study findings revealed that the main causes of fire accidents in the plants are electrical faults, solid wastes, flammable liquids, hot surface and chemicals. Most warehouses (main stores) and production areas were found to carry the highest fire risk in most industries. Lack of knowledge in fire risk management was found to be another main cause of fire accidents.Following the findings of the study, it has been recommended that all manufacturing industries should improve their systems of fire risk management by awareness creation and training in fire risk management to all employees in order to minimize the risk of fire. Equally important, fire risk management should be taken to be everyone’s responsibility
