Factors hindering the efficient control and management of inventory in local governments in Tanzania; the case of municipal councils in Dar es salaam.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2005) Kippingu, Amina Hassan
This study concerns factors hindering the efficient control and management of inventory in local government in Tanzania. About 40 respondents, most of which were responsible for managing and controlling inventories and a few other stakeholders were interviewed. The interviews conducted after having randomly selected them from the three municipal councils in Dar es salaam. It also found out that analysis is the most used method of inventory records control, followed by economic order Quantity ( EOQ ). In addition, employees who manage and control inventories are dissatisfied by poor pay pack. A few respondents were found to be not familiar with the world inventory. Lack of modem facilities, shortage of staff and lack of staff training and career development are among the factors that were found to be causing inefficient management and control of inventory. The municipal councils should introduce modem facilities like computer packages to enable them manage inventories more appropriately and efficiently. In addition, staff remuneration should be enriched to foster employees` morale and job satisfaction. It is further recommended that there should be in place measures to ensure proper recruitment policy as well as staff training and career development programs. Finally, it is recommended that further researchers should be done to cover the wide area and to uncover more factors responsible foe inefficiencies of managing and controlling inventories in municipal councils in Tanzania.
