The attitude of educational stakeholders towards the primary school vocational skills curriculum in dar es salaam Tanzania
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2011) Kipanda, Joyce
This study examined the attitude of educational stakeholders towards the primary school vocational skills curriculum. The study aimed to determine the attitude of different educational stakeholders towards the primary school VSC. Also, the study aimed at identifying suggestions from the educational stakeholders on to how to improve the primary school VSC. A survey design was used by applying both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The sample size consisted 377 respondents from rural and urban Dar es Salaam. Data were collected using questionnaire and documentary review. Data analysis was through content analysis for non quantifiable data and Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software sub-programme frequencies were used for the quantifiable data. The study revealed that on the aspect of interest the primary school students, the vocational skills teachers and the primary school graduates agreed that vocational skills subject is interesting while the parents disagreed. All the groups agreed that the skills of students’ interest are not taught. On the aspect of relevance all the groups agreed that the products/articles made during the VS lessons are important to the students’ community. The primary school students and the vocational skills teachers agreed that the skills students learn in the VS lessons are similar to activities done in the students’ community while the parents and the graduates disagreed. With respect to the employability, the primary school students, the vocational skills teachers and parents agreed that the students can be self employed while the primary school graduates disagreed. Basing on the findings, the study concluded that practices done in schools on the VSC are not favourable although students like to learn the vocational subject. For further research, the study recommended a similar study on the attitude of educational stakeholders towards the VSC to be done to other educational levels such as secondary education or in other regions for more validity.
